How Does the VA Calculator Work? — "VA Math" Explained
The VA does not add ratings together. A 50% plus a 30% is not 80% — it's 65% before rounding. The VA starts with your efficiency (100% minus the rating) and combines sequentially: each new rating is applied to what remains of your efficiency. Formula for two ratings: Combined = R1 + R2 × (100 − R1) ÷ 100. Then the final figure rounds to the nearest 10%.
Worked example: 50% + 30%. Start: 50 + 30 × (100−50)/100 = 50 + 15 = 65% → rounds to 70%. Add a third 20%: 65 + 20 × (100−65)/100 = 65 + 7 = 72% → 70%. This is why veterans call it "VA math" — the more ratings you stack, the smaller each new one's impact, and why chasing individual increases can still move the needle meaningfully at 90%+.
Bilateral factor: when both arms, or both legs, have separate ratings, the VA combines them first, then adds 10% of that combined value on top before merging with everything else. A 30% right leg and 30% left leg combine to 51%, the bilateral boost makes it 56.1%, and that figure enters the main combination. Tick the bilateral box above if your paired-limb ratings qualify.

Pro Tips for VA Ratings
- Combined ratings can never exceed 100%: the efficiency math floors at zero remaining — additional ratings past 100% combined change nothing.
- Bilateral means the PAIR: the factor applies when both arms or both legs carry separate ratings — right leg + left leg qualifies; leg + arm does not.
- The rounding runs both ways: 64% rounds down to 60%, 65% rounds up to 70%. A small increase that crosses a .5 boundary jumps a full pay tier.
- TDIU is the hidden ladder: veterans unable to work may qualify for Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability — paid at the 100% rate — even with a combined rating below 100%. Not modeled here, but ask a VSO.
- Dependents matter from 30%: below 30%, spouse/children don't add compensation; from 30% up, each dependent stacks monthly amounts. This calculator reflects that in the estimate.
