Bracket-by-bracket breakdown
How to Calculate Sales Tax
Example: a $100 purchase at an 8.5% sales tax rate owes $8.50 in tax, for a $108.50 total. Working backwards — if you only know the total, divide it by (1 + rate ÷ 100) to recover the pre-tax price; that is exactly what the VAT/Reverse tab does. Sales tax rates vary wildly: US rates are set state + county + city (0% to around 10%), while VAT/GST countries build the rate into listed prices, which is why the same "tax calculator" query needs different tools per country.
How US Federal Income Tax Brackets Work
The US uses marginal brackets — each rate applies only to the slice of income within that bracket, not your whole income. For 2025, single filers: 10% on the first $11,925; 12% to $48,475; 22% to $103,350; 24% to $197,300; 32% to $250,525; 35% to $626,350; 37% above. The standard deduction ($15,000 single, 2025) is subtracted first, so only taxable income is taxed.
Example — $65,000 gross, single, standard deduction: taxable income = $50,000. Tax = 10% × 11,925 ($1,192.50) + 12% × 36,550 ($4,386) + 22% × 1,525 ($335.50) = $5,914. Your marginal rate (22%) is the tax on your next dollar; your effective rate ($5,914 ÷ $65,000 ≈ 9.1%) is what you actually pay overall — always lower than the marginal bracket. That distinction is the single most misunderstood idea in tax conversations.

Pro Tips for Tax Math
- Marginal ≠ effective: landing in the 22% bracket does not mean 22% of your income is taxed — only the slice above the last threshold. The estimator shows both rates side by side so the difference is visible.
- A raise can't cost you money: because brackets are marginal, moving up never reduces after-tax income. The folklore about "losing money to a higher bracket" confuses marginal with effective rates.
- Sales tax stacking: US rates often stack state + county + city. Enter the combined rate here rather than computing layers separately — the result is identical and faster.
- VAT-inclusive pricing: when a receipt shows one gross number, the remove-VAT direction recovers both the net price and the tax portion — essential for expense claims and B2B invoicing.
- Everything here estimates: bracket thresholds change annually, states differ, credits apply per person. Confirm real figures with your tax authority or a qualified professional.
