Standard GPA Grade Scale (4.0)

LetterGrade pointsLetterGrade points
A4.0C2.0
A−3.7C−1.7
B+3.3D+1.3
B3.0D1.0
B−2.7D−0.7
C+2.3F0.0

A B+ is worth 3.3 grade points — a third of the way from B (3.0) to A (4.0). Many schools skip the − grades (A, B+, B, C+…) or use slightly different values; always confirm your school's official scale, and check whether it rounds. High schools that weight AP, IB and Honors classes typically add +1.0 (so an A in AP Biology earns 5.0), which the calculator above applies per course via the AP/Honors checkbox.

How to Calculate GPA — The Formula

GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit Hours

Each course earns quality points = credits × grade points. Example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course earns 12 points; a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course earns 12 points. Add every course's quality points, divide by total credits — that's your GPA. Cumulative version: add previous GPA × previous credits to your quality points and previous credits to your total credits before dividing. Worked example below in the calculator's step-by-step breakdown.

Pro Tips for GPA Calculation

  • Credits are the multiplier that matters: an A in a 4-credit class pulls your GPA four times as hard as an A in a 1-credit seminar. Always check the credit hours on your schedule, not just the grades.
  • Pass/Fail courses usually don't count: most schools exclude Pass grades from GPA math entirely — leave them out of the calculator.
  • Repeated courses: many schools replace the old grade for repeats (grade forgiveness); some average both attempts. Your registrar's policy decides which number goes in.
  • Weighting varies by school: some high schools add +1.0 for AP/IB and +0.5 for Honors; some cap at 5.0, others at 6.0. This calculator applies the common +1.0 AP/Honors boost per ticked course.
  • Scenario-test your semester: temporarily set every course to the grade you're hoping for, read the cumulative result, then set realistic grades — the gap tells you exactly where to focus study time.

Frequently Asked Questions

GPA equals total quality points divided by total credit hours. Quality points per course are the grade's point value (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, B+ = 3.3, and so on) multiplied by the course's credit hours. Example: an A in a 3-credit course (12 points) plus a B in a 4-credit course (12 points) = 24 points ÷ 7 credits = 3.43 GPA.

Multiply your previous cumulative GPA by the credits you've completed, add the quality points from your current courses, then divide by the combined credit total. Enter your prior GPA and prior credits in the Cumulative section above and the calculator does this blend automatically.

On the standard 4.0 scale, a B+ equals 3.3 grade points — between a B (3.0) and an A− (3.7). Note that some schools don't use plus/minus grades at all; check your institution's official scale.

Weighted high school scales add bonus points for harder classes — commonly +1.0 for AP/IB courses. An A in a regular class earns 4.0; an A in AP Biology earns 5.0. Tick the AP/Honors box on those courses here and the boost applies automatically, capped at 5.0.

Context matters: 3.0 (a B average) meets many graduation and employment baselines; 3.5+ is competitive for most graduate programs and honors societies; 3.8+ is strong for top-tier scholarships and selective admissions. For high schoolers, weighted GPAs above 4.0 are possible with AP courses.

Usually not — Pass grades typically carry no grade points and are excluded from both credits attempted in GPA math and the GPA itself, though they may still count toward degree credits. Since policies differ, exclude Pass/Fail courses from this calculator unless your school says otherwise.

Schools vary on plus/minus values, rounding rules, repeated-course handling, and weighting. This calculator uses the most common standard scale; treat small differences as your institution's local policy, and confirm with the registrar for official figures.

No. Every calculation happens in your browser with JavaScript — your courses, grades and GPA never leave your device. Refresh the page and everything is gone.
