What is CGPA in Anna University?
CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average) in Anna University is the credit-weighted average of your grade points across all completed semesters, on a 0–10 scale. Each course carries credits; each letter grade maps to a grade point (O=10 down to C=5, with U/Ra=0); multiplying credits by grade points gives credit points, and CGPA is total credit points divided by total credits. Semester GPA applies the same formula within a single semester — CGPA simply extends it across your whole programme.
Anna University Grading System
Anna University's letter grades and the grade points commonly used across recent regulations:
| Grade | Grade Point | Marks range (commonly cited) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| O | 10 | 90–100 | Outstanding |
| A+ | 9 | 80–89 | Excellent |
| A | 8 | 70–79 | Very Good |
| B+ | 7 | 60–69 | Good |
| B | 6 | 50–59 | Above Average |
| C | 5 | 45–50 | Pass |
| U / Ra | 0 | Below pass mark | Re-appearance — the course's credits still count in your GPA denominator |
| W | — | — | Withdrawn — excluded from calculations |
A key point students often ask about: an failed (U/Ra) course contributes 0 grade points but its credits still count in Σ Credits — which is exactly why one arrears can drag a semester GPA down sharply, and why clearing arrears early recovers CGPA fastest.
How to Calculate GPA and CGPA
One fully worked example — five courses in a semester:
| Course | Credits | Grade | Grade Point | Credit Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Course 1 | 4 | O | 10 | 40 |
| Course 2 | 3 | A+ | 9 | 27 |
| Course 3 | 4 | B+ | 7 | 28 |
| Course 4 | 3 | A | 8 | 24 |
| Course 5 | 3 | C | 5 | 15 |
| Total | 17 | — | — | 134 |
GPA = 134 ÷ 17 = 7.88. For CGPA, do the same across every semester: total all credit points earned (each semester's GPA × its credits) and divide by total credits — which is exactly what the Overall CGPA tab computes.
GPA vs CGPA
GPA measures one semester; CGPA measures your cumulative performance across all completed semesters. Both use the identical weighted formula — the only difference is scope. Because CGPA is credit-weighted, a strong final semester moves it less than an early one did (more total credits behind it), which is why maintaining consistency matters more than one spectacular come-back — and why the Target Planner is honest about what's mathematically reachable.
Anna University CGPA to Percentage Conversion
The conversion differs by regulation batch — this is the single most common conversion mistake:
- R2021 and R2025: Percentage = CGPA × 10 → CGPA 8.4 × 10 = 84%
- R2017 and R2013: Percentage = (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 → (8.4 − 0.75) × 10 = 76.5%
That's a 7.5-point swing from the same CGPA — matching the wrong regulation on a job or admission form matters. Always confirm against your official AU circular or transcript before submitting anything formal, since institutions occasionally publish their own equivalence certificates.
CGPA Classification Bands
Commonly cited classification ranges used at AU-affiliated colleges: 8.5 and above — First Class with Distinction zone; 6.5–8.49 — First Class zone; 5.5–6.49 — Second Class zone. Treat these as guidance: exact classification also depends on clearing all arrears within your regulation's timeline, so confirm with your college's exam cell for anything official.
What is a Good CGPA in Anna University?
For placements, many IT and core-service recruiters commonly screen at 7.0–7.5 CGPA, with some product companies and dream offers expecting higher — cutoffs vary meaningfully by company, year, and role, so check current criteria rather than assuming. For higher studies, GATE score and CGPA together drive PSU and M.Tech admissions, and foreign universities typically convert your CGPA on their own scales (another reason the regulation-correct percentage matters). Honest framing: a 7.5 with clean arrears opens most doors; momentum from the Target Planner matters more than a single number.

Pro Tips
- High-credit courses move your GPA most. A 4-credit O vs C swings 20 credit points; a 1-credit course swings 5. Prioritize effort by credits — it's pure arithmetic.
- Clear U/Ra arrears early. A 0-point course keeps its credits in your CGPA denominator forever until cleared — each arrears cleared at a good grade buys back real CGPA.
- Track every semester with saved history. One snapshot per result day shows your trend; a plateau is easier to fix when you see it coming.
- Set realistic targets with the what-if table. If reaching your goal needs a sustained 9.5+, plan a strategy — or verify the target against what's mathematically possible.
- Use the exact 2-decimal CGPA on forms — don't round 7.896 to 7.9; eligibility cutoffs are checked to the second decimal.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring failed-course credits. U/Ra credits still count in the denominator — excluding them overstates your GPA.
- Mixing regulations when converting. ×10 and (CGPA − 0.75) × 10 differ by 7.5 percentage points — match your admission-year regulation.
- Rounding before applying. Compute to 2 decimals first, round only at the final step.
- Assuming one formula fits all regulations. Always verify against your official circular for formal submissions.
- Counting withdrawn (W) courses. They're excluded — remove the row rather than entering them as a grade.
