💡 A "bounce" in analytics = a session with a single page and no interactions (clicks, scrolls, events). Find both numbers in GA4 → Reports → Engagement.
💡 Hard bounce = address doesn't exist (remove it). Soft bounce = temporary failure (mailbox full, server down). Your email platform reports both.
🧮 Calculation
What Is a Good Bounce Rate?
| Website type | Good bounce rate | Concerning |
|---|---|---|
| E-commerce & retail sites | 20–45% | Above 60% |
| B2B / lead-gen websites | 25–55% | Above 65% |
| Blogs & content sites | 40–65% | Above 75% |
| Landing pages (single-purpose) | 60–90% | Context-dependent* |
| Service / local business sites | 30–55% | Above 65% |
*Landing pages naturally "bounce" visitors who convert and leave (called a customer, clicked a phone number) — judge them by conversion rate, not bounce rate. Email bounce rates are separate: under 2% is healthy; consistently above 5% damages sender reputation and deliverability. Benchmarks vary by industry and source — treat them as orientation, not law.
How Is Bounce Rate Calculated? — The Formula
Email: Bounce Rate = Bounced Emails ÷ Emails Sent × 100
Worked example — a site with 320 single-page sessions out of 1,000 total sessions: 320 ÷ 1,000 × 100 = 32% bounce rate. Email example: 45 bounces from 5,000 sent = 45 ÷ 5,000 × 100 = 0.9% — comfortably healthy. The calculator above runs both formulas live and shows every step.

Pro Tips — Bounce Rate Analysis That Matters
- Segment before judging: overall bounce rate hides the truth. Check bounce rate per channel — a high bounce from a low-intent source matters less than the same number from organic search.
- Email hygiene compounds: every campaign to dead addresses drags deliverability further. A bounce rate above 5% twice in a row = list-cleaning time, not just a bad send.
- GA4 changed the definition: GA4 reports "engaged sessions" instead of bounces; bounce rate = 100% − engaged-session percentage. The website mode here works with either framing.
- High bounce + high conversion = fine: single-page landing pages that convert visitors instantly will always look "bouncy" — optimize conversions, not vanity metrics.
- Fix website bounces with intent matching: the biggest cause of bounces is a page answering something the visitor didn't ask. Match headline to the traffic source before redesigning anything.
